Micromoon Arrives on Friday the 13th

by Weatherboy Team Meteorologist - September 9, 2019

You may be in luck this Friday; a rare micromoon will make an appearance on a day known for it’s bad luck: Friday the 13th. Opposite of a “supermoon”, the moon on Friday will be  at the point in its orbit where it’ll be at its greatest distance from Earth, called apogee. At its apogee, the full moon on Friday will appear 14% smaller than when  the moon is at its closest, making it a micromoon.

In addition to being a micromoon, it’s also rare for there to be a full moon on any Friday the 13th.  It last happened on October 13, 2000, and it  won’t happen again until August 13, 2049.

This full moon is also considered the “harvest moon”, a time farmers harvest crops prior to the first frost in parts of the country.
