A remarkable winter storm is forecast to explode off the East Coast this week, bringing accumulating snow from Florida’s Gulf Coast north up to Maine and beyond. Some snow, even in the southern Mid Atlantic, could be heavy at times. The heaviest snow will fall over New England, with Maine under the gun with heaviest forecast amounts.

In addition to snow, winds will howl, with winds sustained over 35mph for more than 3 hours over portions of coastal New England. It is in this region that blizzard criteria will be met with this explosive, impressive storm.  Blizzard conditions are met when there’s falling or blowing snow, winds sustained at 35mph for 3 hours+, and visibility no greater than 1/4 mile for 3+ hours.

The worst of the storm will likely impact Nova Scotia and the Canadian Maritimes; portions of New Brunswick province may even see more than 2 feet of snow when the storm wraps up.

Once the storm exits, bitter cold air will rush in behind the system, producing some of the coldest readings yet for a young winter season that has already seen record-breaking, extremely cold temperatures.
