Gulf System Won’t Develop But Will Soak Coast

A weather system located in the northern Gulf of America will soak the coast, but it isn’t expected to develop further into a tropical cyclone. The National Hurricane Center has been tracking in over the last several days, with some computer models forecasting the system to become a tropical depression or storm over time. However, that isn’t the case. But instead of a tropical cyclone threat, the system is now a flood threat for portions of Louisiana.

According to the National Hurricane Center, satellite, surface, and radar data indicate that the broad low pressure area is moving inland over southeastern Louisiana, and that the associated shower and thunderstorm activity remains disorganized and located mainly to the west and southwest of the center.

“Little development is expected while the center remains near the coast this afternoon and tonight, and the system is expected to weaken as it moves farther inland on Friday,” the National Hurricane Center says in its latest Tropical Outlook.

Regardless of development, heavy rainfall could produce localized flash flooding over portions of the north-central Gulf Coast through Friday. The heaviest rain will be in central coastal Louisiana near Baton Rouge.  Heavy rains are also possible into far southeastern Texas and southern Mississippi and Alabama.
