According to USGS, three earthquakes struck Connecticut today, with dozens of people reporting that they felt shaking through the “Did you feel it?” reporting tool on the USGS website. In addition to feeling shaking, many people reported hearing loud booms.
“The Town Hall, Police Department and Emergency Management teams are aware of the incidents that occurred in the Mystic/Old Mystic area consisting of loud booms and shaking of buildings,” announced the town of Stonington in Connecticut.
The three earthquakes struck within minutes of each other shortly after 8 am today. The first struck near Old Mystic at 8:03 am from a shallow depth of 0.8 km; it was a magnitude 2.1 event. Nine minutes later, a magnitude 1.6 earthquake struck nearby from a depth of 2.3 km at 8:12 am. The third earthquake struck 8 minutes later at 8:20 am from a deeper depth of 5.0 km; it was rated a magnitude 1.8 event.
There was an earthquake which struck west of today’s in central Connecticut on March 6; that magnitude 1.7 event struck from a depth of 5 km too. Beyond this central Connecticut quake, there have been no other earthquakes in the state in the last 30 days.
While the earthquakes generated shaking, noise, and concern, there were no reports of damage or injuries.
