Two rockets are due to launch from the Mid Atlantic coast sometime today or tomorrow, but details on the top secret mission aren’t being shared.
NASA says two sounding rockets for the Department of Defense are due to launch sometime between November 15 and 17 but won’t share when exactly this will occur.
“No launch time, livestream, or launch updates will be provided,” said NASA Wallops in a very brief statement.
NASA does say the launch could be visible in the Chesapeake Bay area.
According to NASA, sounding rockets carry scientific instruments into space along a parabolic trajectory. Their overall time in space is brief, typically 5-20 minutes, and at lower vehicle speeds for a well-placed scientific experiment.
Sounding rockets are frequently launched from the NASA Wallops spaceport located on the Virginia Coast on the Mid Atlantic Coast. In addition to sounding rockets, the spaceport also launches the Antares rocket which sends the Cygnus cargocraft to the International Space Station regularly. Rocket Lab is also using the spaceport to launch their Electron Rockets to space.
