Dr. Rick Knabb, the current Director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida has announced he is leaving the center in May to pursue a new career at the Weather Channel. After his last day on May 12, Dr. Knabb will become the cable network’s tropical weather expert. Dr. Knabb was at the Weather Channel in 2010-2012 prior to joining the NHC.
“I am moving on to a new and exciting opportunity that will not only allow me to spend less time traveling and more time at home with family, but extensive time in the studio at The Weather Channel focusing on hurricane and disaster safety communication that has become my greatest passion,” said Knabb to the Miami Herald.
“In my new job, I look forward to utilizing all of the innovative products and warnings that we developed at the National Hurricane Center during the past several years. I am as determined as ever to help prepare the nation in advance and to keep the public safe and resilient when the next hurricane strikes.”
A search for a new permanent director of the National Hurricane Center will be launched immediately. Ed Rappaport, who has served as the Deputy Director of the NHC for 17 years, will serve as acting director until a replacement is named.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1.
