An evolving coastal storm will bring additional snow to portions of the northeast today and tonight. The projected storm system has evolved a little bit differently than it was projected to yesterday, setting up a configuration that keeps milder air over portions of southern New Jersey, Delaware, and eastern Maryland longer while increasing precipitation amounts into southeastern New England.
As a result of changes with forecast data, most snowfall is now expected to fall over the metro New York City area, much of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southeastern Massachussetts. Lighter snow is expected over portions of eastern Maine, southeastern New York, eastern Pennsylvania, and western and central New Jersey.
The precipitation will come in multiple waves today, with the most significant wave moving into this region between 4pm and 9pm for New Jersey and New York City and 6pm and 1am for southeastern New England including central and eastern Long Island.
An inch or two of snow is expected in south-central New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania including Philadelphia, the Poconos, and southeastern Upstate New York; some areas could see 3-4″ of snow, especially in higher terrain away from the coast. Generally 3-4″ is expected around the New York City metro area, much of long island, and the balance of southeastern New England with isolated pockets of 5-6″ possible there too.
The weather will settle down once this coastal system exits the region early Monday. The next chance of a significant storm to impact this region would probably arrive no sooner than next weekend.
