The USGS is reporting that a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Dover, Delaware at 4:47pm today. Residents in New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC are encouraged to visit the USGS website and report if they felt or didn’t feel the quake at this link here. The USGS originally reported it as a 5.1 quake but reduced it after additional analysis.
According to the National Weather Service Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, there is no threat of a tsunami to the US East Coast.
The earthquake’s epicenter was 10 miles northeast of Dover, DE and 55 miles southwest of Philadelphia, PA.
It is unlikely that this earthquake is related to a strong quake that struck the Mid Atlantic Ridge overnight. That 6.7 quake did no damage and generated no tsunami.
