No Tsunami Threat from Strong Atlantic Quake

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 occurred about 56 miles northwest of Anegada at 7:38pm local time. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no threat to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, or the United States east coast from this quake.

The area where the quake struck has been quite active over the last few weeks, prompting the National Weather Service’s Pacific Tsunami Warning CenterĀ  (PTWC) to issue numerous statements for the Atlantic basin.

  • 5.1 on February 4
  • 4.3 on January 30
  • 4.0 on January 29
  • 4.6 on January 15
  • 3.9 on December 29
