While many celebrate Mother’s Day in their own unique way, one pilot in Virginia did something extraordinary this year. According to flight tracking website FlightAware.com, the pilot flew their Diamond DA40 small aircraft from Roanoke airport and “sketched” a design in the sky. While people on the ground would not appreciate what he was doing, a review of his actual flight shows he flew in a way to sketch out a heart and the word “mom” north of the airport.
In 2017, Boeing drew an outline of a 787 with one of their 787 aircraft; that sketch took up much of the central part of the continental United States. Other pilots have also taken to the skies to get creative with their flightplans. Also in 2017, an effort to draw awareness to testicular cancer went viral, leading many pilots to sketch a penis in the sky.
