People have heard the saying, “it’s raining cats and dogs”, but they’ve never likely seen a rain storm actually produce anything other than rain. That’s what happened in the Mexican coastal city of Tampico  when rain drops were joined by fish in a light rain shower on Tuesday.

In a brief statement, Tamaulipas Civil Defense says they received reports of the fishy rain storm. A video and photos posted on their Facebook page shows the unusual sight of small fish raining down on sidewalks with the rain.  According the U.S. Library of Congress, it’s a phenomenon that has been reported since ancient times. Scientists believe that tornadoes over water, better known as waterspouts, could be responsible for sucking fish into the air where they are blown around until being released to the ground.
