Severe thunderstorms are developing in the Mid Atlantic with more on the way, prompting the National Weather Service to issue Severe Thunderstorm Watches that are now in effect across many states. Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected through this evening over portions of the Ohio Valley into eastern New York and the Mid-Atlantic region. With these storms, damaging wind gusts are the main hazard expected with these storms more so than the risk of tornadoes.

One Severe Thunderstorm Watch box is up across portions of upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania. This watch is in effect through 11 pm and has been issued due to threats of scattered damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and isolated large hail events up to 1.5″ in diameter.

Another Severe Thunderstorm Watch box is up across portions of southern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.  This watch is in effect through 8 pm tonight.  The primary threat here is from scattered damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph.

Other Severe Thunderstorm Watches and Warnings may be issued throughout the region as thunderstorms blossom and head east and southeast.
