Hazardous fire weather conditions are persisting in portions of the Carolinas, prompting the National Weather Service to issue alerts about the situation there.

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Danger Statement through 8pm this evening in the region. They write, “The combination of accumulating dry fuels and low relative humidity will continue to lead to increased fire danger today. Relative humidity values will drop to around 15-20 percent this afternoon and with an abundance of dry fuels available, these conditions will result in adverse fire behavior.”

Authorities have issued burn bans for both North and South Carolina until further notice. This also means all burning permits have been cancelled. “PLEASE, heed these burn bans in order to mitigate any additional uncontained wildfires,” the National Weather Service writes.

The combination of low relative humidity of 18 to 25 percent and dry fuels will continue a risk of adverse fire behavior over central North Carolina through this evening. While winds are not expected to be strong, brief gusts to 15 mph are possible during the afternoon, continuing the enhanced fire danger conditions.

According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission and the North Carolina Forest Service, wildfires have torched more than 17,645 acres there.
