A significant earthquake swarm continues to strike Nevada east of Lake Tahoe and Carson City. According to USGS, there have been 82 earthquakes here in the last 24 hours, with the strongest being a magnitude 5.7 earthquake which struck at 6:29 pm this evening. The earthquakes have been striking around the Lahontan Recreation area which sits below the Lahontam Dam.
Following passage of the Newlands Reclamation Act of 1902, the Lahontan Dam was constructed along the Carson River between Fallon and Carson City. The dam, measuring 162 feet high and 1,700 feet long, was completed in 1915. The reservoir was named after ancient Lake Lahontan which covered much of Nevada during the last ice age. The epicenter of all of these earthquakes are to the south of the dam and the lake it creates.
The strongest quake of the series today was felt in nearby communities and parts of northern California. Local emergency teams are conducting preventative inspections to rule out any structural damage to critical infrastructure; as of now, there have been no reports of any major issues discovered in their work.
