With an unusual nor’easter impacting the Mid Atlantic today, many became confused when a popular weather app started alerting users to a Blizzard Warning. The “Breaking News” bulletins on the Weather Channel app warned people that Blizzard Watches and Warnings were up for New York City. However, no such advisory is in effect for the Big Apple. There are actually no weather advisories of any kind up in the New York City area today.
The Weather Channel promotes their app online: “Never get caught in the rain again with this powerful, free mobile app for iPhone and Apple Watch. Stay informed with reliable forecasts, interactive radar and real-time rain alerts…”
The Weather Channel wrote an apology, explaining the snafu:
A technical issue resurfaced several of the articles on which breaking news alerts were sent in the past few years, and you received them as if they were happening now. We hope you noticed the dates didn’t match up, and wrote it off as an honest mistake. For any confusion that occurred, we sincerely apologize.
