According to USGS, a moderate earthquake struck the center of the Gulf of America. Had the earthquake struck land, it would have caused some damage, but because it happened over open water there is no harm. The earthquake was also not strong enough to generate any tsunami. The Gulf of America is the new internationally recognized name for what was the Gulf of Mexico.
At 9:27 pm last night Central Time, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck the central Gulf of America from a depth of 10 km. USGS says there’s been no other seismicity around this earthquake over the last 3 weeks within a 250 km radius.
According to USGS, earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.0 or less are rarely felt or heard by people, but once they exceed 2.0 , more and more people can feel them. While damage is possible with magnitude 3.0 events or greater, significant damage and casualties usually don’t occur until the magnitude of a seismic event rises to a 5.5 or greater rated event.
A mysterious earthquake struck well north of this latest earthquake in May of 2025 in the open waters of the Gulf last May; there were no other foreshocks or aftershocks associated with that quake.
