Tropical Storm Fernand has formed in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. According to the National Hurricane Center, this sixth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season is of no threat to the U.S. East Coast. However Bermuda could see some swells from the distant storm as it tracks well east of the island.

At 5pm ET, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) classified a system located 405 miles south-southeast of Bermuda as Tropical Storm Fernand. Fernand has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and a minimum central pressure of 1010 mb or 29.83″. It is moving due north at 15 mph.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

According to the NHC forecast, a north-northeastward motion at a gradually increasing forward speed is anticipated during the next couple of days, followed by a turn to the northeast. On the forecast track, Fernand should move well east of Bermuda and across the open waters of the subtropical North Atlantic. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Fernand could be near hurricane strength on Monday. Weakening is expected to begin on Tuesday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center.

The NHC is also tracking another disturbance located about 650 miles east of the Windward Islands. That system only has a 20% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone; beyond that, the NHC isn’t tracking any other active tropical cyclone threat in the Atlantic.

The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season started on June 1 and runs through to the end of November. September 10 is traditionally the peak of the season.
