As part of a trend known as “babywearing”, meteorologist Susie Martin showed how she accommodates her child at work by wearing him during a weathercast. In a blog post on the Praedictix website, Martin wrote, “Babywearing has been a passion of mine since my son came into my world. It has been an invaluable tool for me as a mother and helped me and my son bond during the early stages of infancy. Not only that, but it was and still is incredibly liberating to be able to comfort my child whilst doing other tasks, which has helped me be a happier mom. To this day, it is a source of comfort and calmness for him.”
A non-profit group called “Babywearing International” championed the cause. But with the mainstreaming of the practice, the group folded this summer. Prior to closing, they said, “It is a traditional practice in many cultures that is not widely used by modern industrialized societies, but it nonetheless has many benefits for both children and caregivers. Babywearing promotes bonding, supports breastfeeding, can help combat postpartum depression, makes caregiving easier, and can be a lifesaver for parents of high-needs children. Carried babies sleep, feed, and grow better. ” Upon closing, Babywearing International said, “For the past ten years, Babywearing International has grown alongside the babywearing community. We are grateful for all the support we’ve received over the years. Babywearing has become more mainstream with many “big box” stores selling carriers resulting in more caregivers babywearing. We’ve made great strides towards fulfilling our mission of making babywearing accessible for all caregivers.”
