Tropical Storm Sean formed earlier today but is struggling to become better organized. The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) on the storm shows it isn’t expected to live long; the official NHC forecast has the storm degenerating around Monday.

For now, Sean had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was located about 815 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The storm is moving to the west-northwest at 13 mph. The tropical storm’s minimum central pressure is estimated to be 1006 mb or 29.71″.

According to the NHC, little change in strength is forecast for the next 72 hours. Sean is expected to maintain a west-northwestward to northwestward motion for the next several days.

The storm is forecast to avoid all land masses for now.

Tropical Storm Sean is the 19th  named storm of the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Only three other Atlantic seasons on record have had 19 or more named storms by this date: 2005 (21 named storms), 2020 (25 named storms) and 2021 (20 named storms). Sean formed early today 33.1º West, making it the farthest east that a tropical storm has formed in the tropical Atlantic this late in the calendar year on record.

The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Center runs through the end of November. While the NHC is tracking another disturbance that is leaving the coast of Africa, they don’t expect any tropical cyclone formation anywhere in the basin over the next 7 days.
