Frost & Freeze Advisories Issued for Northeast

by Weatherboy Team Meteorologist - October 13, 2018

Many could see their first frost of the fall season by tomorrow morning.
Many could see their first frost of the fall season by tomorrow morning.

After an unusually warm and muggy stretch of weather, it’ll begin to finally feel like fall across much of the northeast. Cold and dry air is arriving from Canada, prompting the National Weather Service to issue frost and freeze related advisories for cold conditions that could harm plants and animals.

A Freeze Warning is issued when freezing temperatures are forecasted to threaten outdoor plants.  The National Weather Service will issue a Frost Advisory when frost and freeze conditions may damage sensitive vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered. The National Weather Service cautions those with agricultural interests in the warned area to harvest or protect tender vegetation. In the advisory areas, potted plants normally left outdoors should be covered or brought indoors too.

Once a killing frost or freeze occurs, the growing season is considered over. When the growing season is declared over in a county, frost and freeze advisories won’t be issued anymore for that area even if conditions warm or more frost or freeze events unfold.

Right now, Frost Advisories are up for portions of Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine. A Freeze Warning is in effect for portions of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
