The USGS is reporting that a relatively mild earthquake with a magnitude of 2.7 rattled Virginia this morning. The quake hit at 5:04am about  9 kilometers south of Louisa, at a depth of 4 kilometers.

There are no reports of damage or injuries. Reports being sent to USGS by local residents show it was noticed in central and eastern Virginia and southwestern Maryland.

A much larger quake occurred near here on August 23, 2011. On that date, a 5.8 magnitude quake hit Louisa County too, with reports of movement reported in Philadelphia and New York City and as far north as Canada. That was the largest earthquake measured in the Washington, DC area.
