While snowflakes are flying in the northeast today, with some areas getting over 6″ of snow, it appears Old Man Winter isn’t quite done. Even with the calendar showing the end of March near, it appears another area of low pressure will bring heavy, wet snow to portions of the northeast next Monday. While precipitation is forecast to fall as plain rain in places like New York City, snow is expected to fall across eastern Upstate New York and into central New England.
As with the weather system responsible for today’s snow, next week’s snow will be the result of an area of low pressure tracking through the region. With just enough cold air to tap into, snow will fall. Because of expected marginal temperature profiles just below freezing, the snow should be of the wet, sticky, heavy nature. Because of this consistency, snow will tend to stick to trees, branches, and any early buds and leaves popping on trees. The weight of this kind of wet snow could bring down tree branches and even power lines, resulting in power outages. Because this same area is hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, some power outages may be prolonged.
