South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has called for coastal evacuations of her entire state beginning at 3pm ET Wednesday afternoon. Evacuations will take a LONG time –leave early while you can! Make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas + all of your Hurricane Action Plan supplies and documents.
A Mandatory Evacuation is in effect now for Cape Lookout, North Carolina. The National Park Service says no vehicles will be allowed onto the islands, and that vehicle ferries will immediately start to remove visitors and vehicles. “The goal is to get everyone off of Cape Lookout as soon as possible,” according to the National Park Service.
Florida Governor Rick Scott is expected to announce evacuations soon for his central and northern counties on the east coast of the Sunshine State. “If you are on Florida’s east coast, you should know today where you will go if you have to evacuate. If you are able to leave early and go now, before there is traffic, please go. No one should take any risks,” said Scott.
Millions of people are expected to be evacuated from the US east coast this week as Major Hurricane Matthew is expected to impact the coast in the coming days. Residents in Florida, Georgia, and South and North Carolina should closely monitor conditions for additional evacuation orders and requests. Even if you’re not in an evacuation order zone now, if you’re on the coast, now is a good time to see what your evacuation route is should evacuations become necessary in your area.
