In the wake of the significant snowstorm that dumped more than 30″ of snow in portions of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, cold air is surging south into the deep south, prompting the National Weather Service to issue Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings into much of Florida. In addition to those official warnings, the National Weather Service is warning the public to watch out for more fall-out from the cold air: falling iguanas.

The National Weather Service office in Miami issued an alert to warn people of the possibility of iguanas falling. “Falling iguanas possible,” the National Weather Service warns. They add, “Iguanas are cold blooded. They slow down or become immobile when temps drop into the 40s. They may fall from trees, but they are not dead.”

Even in south Florida, temperatures will be quite cold during the early morning hours today. Wake-up temperatures will be in the mid 40’s for the Miami Metro and Gulf Coast, low 40’s in the Palm Beach / Ft. Lauderdale area, and in the mid to upper 30’s in interior portions of south Florida around Lake Okeechobee.

As the sun warms the environment –and the fallen iguanas–, they’ll eventually come out of shock and go about their usual business …as long as they weren’t hurt by their fall.
