A new Tropical Depression has formed in the Atlantic Hurricane Basin and experts at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida expect it to become the next named Tropical Storm of the relatively uneventful 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

As of the latest advisory from the NHC, this new tropical depression, the 6th of the season, is located about 525 miles southwest of the Azores. Maximum sustained winds are 35 mph while the estimated minimum central pressure is 1009 mb or 29.80″.

The tropical depression is drifting toward the north near 2 mph. According to the NHC, this system is expected to generally move to the northeast for the next 24 to 36 hours, before turning toward the southwest in a couple of days. As it drifts about, slight strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours and the system is expected to become a tropical storm. If/when that happens, it would be given the name Fay. However, the NHC expects gradual weakening to occur from that point on as the system moves over open waters of the central Atlantic.

Elsewhere in the basin, which includes the Gulf of America and the Caribbean, the NHC says there’s no other areas showing signs of possible tropical cyclone development. In fact, no tropical cyclone formation is expected anywhere in the basin for at least the next 7 days.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs through to the end of November.
