Tropical Storm Fay, the latest tropical cyclone to form in the otherwise quiet Atlantic Hurricane Season, is nearly to hurricane strength but meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida forecast the storm to fizzle in the coming days, dissipating entirely before the end of the week.

According to the latest advisory issued by the NHC, Fay was located about 385 miles southwest of the Azores. With maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, it’s just a few miles per hour short of meeting the hurricane threshold. The minimum central pressure is down to 995 mb or 29.39″.

Fay is now moving toward the east-southeast near 5 mph. The NHC says that a turn to the southwest is anticipated on Monday which should continue through the early part of this week. Little change is strength is forecast tonight, but Fay should begin to weaken on Monday. The tropical cyclone is forecast to become a post-tropical cyclone by the middle of this week and dissipate by Friday.

The rest of the Atlantic Hurricane Basin remains quiet; the NHC says they expect no tropical cyclones to form anywhere in it for at least the next 7 days.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs through the end of November; it typically peaks during the second week of September, but the season has yet to produce any hurricanes anywhere within the basin this year.
