Drought Monitor Changes Little in Latest Update

by Weatherboy Team Meteorologist - July 4, 2019

While there is a severe drought in small portions of Alaska and Hawaii, the Lower 48 is relatively moist. However, there are some signs of drought forming over portions of the southeast and northwest. Image: weatherboy.com

The latest Drought Monitor report was released yesterday; it showed a continuation of the last report, reflecting very little drought across the country. While the amount of land covered by drought conditions is small, it does exist. And the worst drought conditions are near Ketchikan, Alaska and on Hawaii’s Big Island at South Point. These two areas away from the continental United States are considered to be in severe drought conditions now.

The Northeast, the Mid Atlantic, and much of California continue to benefit from a wet weather pattern that extended into the spring. None of these areas is seeing drought. If anything, rainfall amounts on a year to date basis are very high, if not record-breaking, for many locations.

Dry conditions are taking root in portions of the southeast and northwest though. In these areas, the weather pattern hasn’t provided much in the way of recent relief. Significant changes in the weather pattern aren’t expected soon, so the areas that have been wet and the areas that have been unusually dry are likely to remain so for the next few weeks at least.
