The earthquake swarm in Puerto Rico continues with another strong earthquake this afternoon followed by numerous aftershocks. Originally rated a 5.3, USGS re-analyzed the quake and recorded it as a 5.0 magnitude. In less than 2 hours since that quake struck,  a 2.7, 2.6, 3.6, 2.8, 2.9, and 3.1 hit too, keeping nerves rattled as residents deal with a daily onslaught of earthquakes that have impacted the island since the end of December.

Because today’s quake was rated a 5.0, schools were ordered closed for inspection. Most schools are still closed on the island due to recovery efforts tied to Hurricane Maria in 2017 and the damaging earthquakes that have hit the island in recent weeks. Once inspections are complete, schools may re-open, but it may take additional days and weeks for that to happen.

While today’s 5.0 was potent, it wasn’t strong enough to generate a tsunami around the Caribbean basin nor around Puerto Rico.
