Last Thursday, August 20, was a busy day meteorologically-speaking with a well-forecast tornado outbreak unfolding. The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, responsible for covering the Philadelphia metro region, eastern Pennsylvania, western and southern New Jersey, all of Delaware, and portions of northeast Maryland have completed their storm surveys from that outbreak, confirming that 6 tornadoes did in fact touch-down in the region on Thursday. One hit New Jersey, one hit Pennsylvania, one hit Maryland, and 3 hit Delaware.

Hours before the tornadoes struck, the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center warned, “An organizing cluster of storms will pose increasing potential to produce damaging wind gusts and a couple of tornadoes into and across the Greater Philadelphia vicinity through the the 6-7 PM EDT time frame.”

The tornadoes hit Dover, Delaware at 6:09 pm, Barclay, Maryland at 5:41 pm, Marydel, Delaware at 5:54 pm, Hazlettville, Delaware at 6:02 pm,  East Caln Township, Pennsylvania, at 5:40 pm,  Estell Manor, New Jersey at 4:41 pm.
