A pickup truck driving on a Milwaukee highway overpass encountered icy conditions and skidded off it, plunging 70 feet to the highway below on Saturday. Miraculously, the driver survived as the truck landed wheels-down on I-94 below. The whole event was captured by a traffic camera operated by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, who made the video public.
According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, a preliminary investigation indicated the driver was driving on the ramp from the East to the South in the Zoo Interchange when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle traveled up a snowbank and proceeded over the barrier wall, crashing 70 feet below onto the westbound I-94 distress lane. The Milwaukee Fire Department arrived on the scene of the incident and transported the driver to a local hospital.
“When deputies arrived, they found the red pickup upright in the right distress lane of the westbound I-94 lanes. Two citizens were on the scene providing aid to the lone occupant,” the Milwaukee Country Sheriff’s Office said. “The driver was conscious and breathing and did not show signs of impairment.”
The February 6 crash occurred shortly before 10am when light snow and freezing rain was in the area. While the highway was closed briefly for the preliminary investigation, all of the roads were re-opened a short time later.
