The last two days have brought another round of light snow to a region that has seen a lot of it this winter; for the winter-weary and those eager for spring, there is some good news: a bit of a winter thaw will arrive with milder temperatures and less chances for snow in the short term.
Most of the snow fell on Monday although a reinforcing frontal passage helped squeeze out additional snowflakes from snow squalls yesterday. However, mid-range guidance from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) suggests that near to above normal temperatures are likely over the next two weeks across the eastern two thirds of the country.
Before the thaw begins, people are still digging and brushing their way out of the latest snow. These are the snowfall amounts collected from the National Weather Service:

While conditions have been cold and snowy for many weeks in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic, it appears that Old Man Winter will be taking a break. According to the Climate Prediction Center, from the Dakotas south to eastern Texas and all points east, temperatures are more likely than not to be above normal. Across the upper plains and Great Lakes, the odds for above normal temperatures are greatest. Florida is also likely to see above normal temperatures. While above normal temperatures doesn’t preclude the possibility of snow over the next 2 weeks, it does limit how much can fall and where.
While the east warms, the west will cool. Alaska and states from the Rockies west should see below normal temperatures over the next two weeks.
Unlike the last two weeks, the next 10 days appear to absent of significant snowstorms in the eastern United States. Neither the European ECMWF nor American GFS forecast models are suggesting any significant snowstorms in the eastern United States for at least the next 10 days at this time.
