Due to extreme flooding created by Harvey, officials in Houston have announced the closure of airports there. Houston’s Hobby (HOU) will remain closed at least through 8am Wednesday while Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) will remain closed at least through noon Monday. With additional extreme rainfall and tornadoes expected, these closures may be extended. The Houston area airports have been battered by heavy rainfall since Harvey arrived in Texas as a Major Hurricane Friday evening.
Houston’s IAH airport is home to a major hub for United Airlines. With operations in Houston shut, there will likely be a ripple effect throughout the entire US air transportation system. Air travelers are urged to check with their airline for travel disruptions caused by Harvey in cities around the country. Because IAH also provided numerous international flights, including a large volume to/from Mexico and Central America, impacts will also be felt outside of the US.
