An early season winter storm is forecast to bring up to 10″ of snow to portions of the Eastern United States over the coming days. Due to the expected significant snow, the National Weather Service has begun to issue Winter Weather Advisories, Winter Storm Watches, and Winter Storm Warnings ahead of the storm.
A warm front will progress north across parts of the Mid Atlantic today as a low pressure system and an associated strong cold front moves
into the Northeast tonight and Thursday with some much needed rain and, in the higher terrain, snow. Low pressure is then forecast to linger across the Northeast into the weekend with much colder air before moving into the Canadian Maritimes by the end of the
weekend.
In addition to welcome rain across lower elevations of the Mid Atlantic and Northeast, this storm will also produce pockets of heavy snow along the highest terrain of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. Up to 6″ is possible in portions of southern Upstate New York while 6-10″ is possible in the highest terrain of Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Light snow will also fall across much of Michigan and Indiana, across central and northern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey, southern New York state, and portions of Ohio. Generally 1-3″ of light snow can be expected in these areas.
Due to the expected wintry weather, Winter Storm Warnings are up for portions of West Virginia now. Winter Weather Advisories are also up for portions of Kentucky, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, western Virginia, and New York. Winter Storm Watches are up for portions of northeast and west-central Pennsylvania; these watches will likely be converted to Winter Storm Warnings or Winter Weather Advisories later today.
