Short-lived Tropical Storm Chris has dissipated over Mexico after making landfall there early this morning. At around 1am local time today, Chris made landfall about 75 miles southeast of Tuxpan, Mexico, moving on-shore with 40 mph winds.

While Chris was a minimal tropical storm, it brought and continues to bring soaking rains over eastern and central Mexico.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Chris is responsible for dropping 4-8″ of rain over an area that saw soaking rains not long ago from Tropical Storm Alberto which also hit the Mexican Gulf Coast. With rain still falling, maximum rainfall totals around 12″ are possible across the higher terrain of the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Queretaro, and San Luis Potosi. This rainfall will result in areas of flooding, with mudslides possible in areas of higher terrain.

It is too soon to tell if this area will also be hit by Hurricane Beryl, which the National Hurricane Center believes should be in or near the Gulf of Mexico by next weekend.
