Significant Storm Surge Possible as Hurricane Ian Approaches U.S. Coast

An extremely dangerous storm surge is possible as Hurricane Ian approaches Florida later this week. Water may rise as high as 10' up onto dry ground near the coast and push inland, submerging many homes, businesses, and roadways. In addition to risk of surge on the Gulf Coast of Florida, there is also a risk of storm surge for northeastern Florida and the coast of Georgia along the Atlantic Ocean. Image: NHC
